Shapes of Becoming is a large-scale textured abstract artwork designed around contrast: raised mineral surfaces against translucent washes, density against open space, forms that appear anchored beside others that seem to be dissolving.
I built the surface with acrylic, gesso, resin and natural sand on juta canvas, allowing the materials to retain their irregularities. The relief catches directional light particularly well, creating small shadows and shifts in depth that change as you move through the space.
The forms themselves remain deliberately unresolved. They can suggest water, eroded terrain, atmospheric movement or an aerial landscape without becoming any one of them. That ambiguity comes from the idea behind the painting: we are continually changing, but earlier versions of ourselves remain part of what we become.
At 70.9 × 59.1 inches, Shapes of Becoming has the scale to establish a strong visual presence in residential, hospitality, executive and commercial interiors without relying on colour for impact. Its material depth makes it particularly responsive to architectural spaces where natural light, stone, wood, concrete and tactile finishes play an important role.
