The Concept
The Folding Horseshoe Chair (Jiaoyi) stands at the pinnacle of the traditional Chinese seating hierarchy, historically known as the "Seat of Supremacy." Redesigned by designers Yuchen and Judy, this piece is inspired by the legendary Wang Shixiang collection at the Shanghai Museum. It is built upon the "Conflict Aesthetic"—utilizing the rigorous structural purity of the Ming form to provide a profound counterpoint to the cold stone, glass, and industrial minimalism of contemporary Western executive environments.
Historical Significance
Originating from the "Hu Chuang" (folding stool) of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Jiaoyi evolved into a symbol of imperial power and scholarly integrity. Historically used by royalty and generals during excursions, it is the origin of the phrase "Sitting in the First Chair."
The Craft and Material
Meticulously executed in Royal Crimson Flamewood, a legendary timber with "lava-like" red and black grain. This sinking-grade wood possesses a density exceeding 1.0g/cm³, anchoring the space with its physical weight and historical dignity.
The Baibao-Kan Inlay: The backsplat features the exquisite "Baibao-Kan" (Hundred Treasures Inlay) technique. Artisans meticulously carve intricate grooves into the timber to embed a vibrant composition of polished shells and precious jade, creating a stunning visual narrative that celebrates prosperity and zen philosophy.
The Engineering: Features a sophisticated X-frame folding mechanism, reinforced with precision-fitted brass hardware to prevent stress fractures and ensure structural immortality.
The Horseshoe Back: Constructed from multiple segments connected via specialized "Wedge-and-Pin" mortise joints to form a continuous, ergonomic curve.
The Structure: Handcrafted, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joinery for the core wooden framework.
