Diamond Springs, a historic Flint Hills town in Morris County, Kansas, is named for a nearby productive spring of the same name near the top of the painting. Once an important oasis on the Santa Fe Trail, it is now a ghost town.
The stronger burnt coloration in the lower left of the painting references the annual burning of the prairie grasses in the region.
