I spent my summer in the Vail Valley, a beautiful community in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. For the past two years, I have been creating cyanotypes from the plants around me. On hikes, I collect small clippings from favorite discoveries and use them to make vibrant blue sunprints.
Larger botanical forms, such as grass fields and trees, begin as iPhone photographs that I convert into negatives for printing. I also use household chemicals, natural dyes, soap bubbles, and cling wrap to create a range of tones and textures.
As summer moved into fall, the daily changes in the landscape inspired me to combine cyanotypes from last fall and this summer into two large grid paintings. The finished works feature more than 30 plant varieties gathered from my garden, hikes, and sketches of plants growing in my neighbors’ yards.
