This asymmetrical ceramic vessel was created using a white stoneware clay body. It was formed using a potter’s wheel and then altered by hand to provide the softly distorted silhouette and a slightly tilted mouth. The vessel was finished with a carbon trapping Shino glaze that contributed to the rich blend of earthy browns, smoky purples, and metallic lusters, creating a dynamic interplay of sheen and texture. Subtle indentations and irregular contours evoke organic movement, while the glossy finish reveals layered glaze effects; a result of the 5-day wood kiln firing process. The piece feels both sculptural and functional, with a tension between control and spontaneity. Due to the process used creating hand-made vessels, all variations concerning firing, color, size, are natural features in the process. This process creates the unique beauty of a one-of-a-kind piece.

Collectible ceramic studio art vessels, mid-century inspired stoneware forms highlighting expressive atmospheric kiln effects.

My name is Neil Fallon. My relationship with clay began over 50 years ago in high school—an early spark that quietly shaped the course of my life. After college, I started gathering the tools of the trade and pursued pottery as a passionate sideline to my corporate life.

My work is rooted in the legacy of mid-century American studio potters, whose forms helped elevate ceramics from functional craft to recognized fine art. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement and the teachings of Marguerite Wildenhain, I initially focused on precision and form—striving to create the “perfect pot.” Over time, my approach softened, and I embraced the term once popular in the post-industrial age: I am a vessel maker who makes art.

A move to New Hampshire over two decades ago offered a shift toward a more intentional life. I built a 432-square-foot studio, discovered new techniques, and fell in love with Shino glazes—whose unpredictable beauty led me to invest in a downdraft gas kiln to explore their endless variations. I have also been able to explore wood-firing techniques as a member of the NH Potters Guild.
