The largest and also the first in this color scheme of my Sunrise series of tree paintings. I wanted to capture the cool hues of a winter sunrise. As seasons change, so does the color of light at dawn & dusk. I painted the light, not the tree, just as one carves a woodcut.
The entire canvas began the cool darker color of the branches and I painted the pale sky second. The dark lavender-gray undercoat was painted thinly and allowed to show through as the shapes of the leaves. The paler lilac sky was scrubbed on in sheer layers with the darkness peeking through to create a vibrancy like a quiet hum.
The 1.5 inch deep sides are painted the darker color of the leaves, contrasting with the paler sky, acting as a built-in frame.
