Senseless Tears, 2023 depicts a weeping willow tree growing out of foliage and encircled by a star chart. This work is painted over book pages from Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. The title: Senseless Tears, refences Austen’s book, and the word: Tears, refers to both the heartbreak of the novel’s three heroines as well as the central image of the weeping willow. The constellation map that surrounds the tree, suggests at the timelessness of love.
Most of the text from the book pages has been painted out line by line, giving the composition a woven quality - like a tapestry. Only the trunk of the tree shows uninterrupted text from the novel’s pages beneath, hinting at the structure of the image and giving the viewer a moment to consider the underlaying meaning of the painting.
