Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1960-1970, this 4x7 vintage rug originates from the Khatanga village of Russia, and is an exciting new mid-century curation from Rug & Kilim’s collection of rare and unusual rugs.

On the Design:

A navy blue field with dusty rose floral patterns enfolds a field of the same warm tones, which underscores floral patterns with a particular emphasis on light blue and beige-brown among the many hues at play—a whimsical polychromatic palette that lends a particular sense of life and movement in the primitivist motifs. To the mention of primitivism, admirers of the craft and keen eyes may note both characters and small-scale figural motifs throughout the field, especially tribal representations of birds and other animals in the most archaic fashion. It’s an especially interesting find to see these elements in tandem with those of the border, populated with geometric rosettes and architectural elements of an almost Bessarabian and country sensibilities. It’s every bit an intriguing find as much as a fabulous work of rustic, old-world charm, worthy of vast applications and equally suitable in size and sensibility to wall-hanging projects, too.

Condition:

This vintage Russian rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

A Legacy of Excellence Since the Beginning

Rug & Kilim is a New York–based institution devoted to the art of rugs, kilims, and tapestries. Founded in 1980 by Jahanshah “Josh” Nazmiyal, we began as a humble family workshop and have grown into one of the most respected authorities in the field—without ever losing the intimacy and integrity that define our boutique ethos. For over four decades, we’ve served collectors, designers, and connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, soul, and above all, rarity.

In 1989, Rug & Kilim celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its second store in Morristown, New Jersey. The business quickly established itself as a national source for the finest Oriental rugs, offering a wide-ranging collection from Persia, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Russia, and China. Known for its expertise, curated selection, and exceptional customer service, Rug & Kilim became synonymous with quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of color and design. The firm’s commitment to placing rare and distinguished pieces in homes and collections across the country has remained at the heart of its philosophy for decades.
