The Celestial Kumo Drift — Japanese Ceremonial Silk Lumbar Pillow, Auspicious Cloud in White and Gold

Price from £208 to £297

A lumbar pillow cover in Japanese ceremonial silk, cut from a Nishijin fukuro obi (袋帯): the zuiun (瑞雲, auspicious cloud) drifting in gold and silver thread across champagne-white silk. Undyed linen reverse, envelope-pocket back, no metal against the silk; 50 × 31 cm (also 36 × 31 cm). For Scandinavian linen and pale interiors. Spot clean only. Unrepeatable, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam. Zuiun. The auspicious cloud. Long associated in Japanese decorative culture with great fortune — drifting cloud bands woven here across champagne-white silk in the visual vocabulary of classical Japanese picture scrolls. Across a champagne-white silk ground, drifting banks of zuiun cloud are rendered in textured gold and silver metallic thread. Between them, vermilion and azure wild flora appear in restrained vignettes — negative space and detail held in deliberate balance. The cool luminosity of the ground makes this piece exceptionally adaptable. The white gives the composition its space. The gold gives it its drift. A pillow for Scandinavian linen, the velvet arm of a chesterfield, Belgian cotton beds — quiet beauty for ordinary moments, gathered around a shared table. The face is the original silk, backed in undyed linen. Envelope pocket closure. No metal touches the visible silk. Product type Lumbar pillow cover Silk source Japanese ceremonial obi (pre-loved); origin Japan. Never repeated.

Renaras is an Amsterdam atelier that transforms vintage Japanese ceremonial silk (kimono, obi, furisode and uchikake) into contemporary objects for the home and wardrobe. Wall tapestries, silk textile paintings, bed runners, cushions, table runners, placemats, napkins, bottle sleeves and knot bags are each cut from a single textile, so every piece is unrepeatable. The practice follows mottainai, the Japanese conviction that nothing of value should be wasted. Silk woven for ceremony is given a second life rather than left folded away. Each piece is finished by skilled seamstresses and accompanied by a record of its provenance.
