A terracotta nightstand with a hand cut buffalo bone sunburst across both drawers. Curved waterfall top, arched feet, made to order in India.
🌞 About this piece
Two drawers, each carrying a full sunburst that radiates out from a domed bone knob at the centre. The rays are not printed and not painted. Every one of them is a separate strip of buffalo bone, cut by hand and set into the terracotta ground.
The top rolls over the front edge in a continuous waterfall curve rather than meeting at a hard corner, and the base lifts on four arched feet so the piece reads lighter than its size. A thin bone border frames the drawer face and repeats on both side panels, so it holds up from any angle in a room.
Terracotta was chosen because it is the rare warm tone that works against deep green, teal, chocolate and cream walls without fighting any of them.
🦴 How it is made
This is a Mughal era technique that survives in a handful of workshops in northern India. Buffalo bone, a byproduct of the food industry, is cut into thousands of small pieces by hand. The wooden carcass is built first, then the pattern is drawn straight onto it. Each bone piece is shaped and placed individually against the drawn line.
Once the pattern is set, pigmented resin is poured around the bone to form the coloured ground. The whole surface is then sanded back by hand until the bone and the ground sit perfectly flush and the piece is polished. That resin ground is what makes the colour possible and it is part of the traditional process, not a shortcut.
A cast resin panel moulded to imitate an inlay pattern will feel completely uniform under your hand. On a piece like this you can feel where each bone strip meets the ground, because they are two different materials that have been levelled into one surface.
A piece this size takes a small team roughly two to three weeks.
