Sky was made to hold a feeling: the particular blue of the Sierra sky over Lake Tahoe, early morning before the light shifts. The rope is dyed with indigo, pulled through the dye bath by hand until it reached that tone, not quite cerulean, not quite grey, exactly the color of altitude.
The structure is organic cotton and wool knotted around Tahoe driftwood, each section building on the last. Two glass globe terrariums are woven directly into the fiber, each cradling a living air plant. They are not decoration, they are the breath of the piece.
Air plants need only light and air. They do not root into soil. They hold on, and they thrive. Sky is about that, the lightness of something that finds a way.
Materials: indigo-dyed organic cotton rope, natural organic cotton rope, wool accents in olive, teal, and plum, Tahoe driftwood, glass globe terrariums, live air plants.
Dimensions: 49 inches high by 14 inches wide. One of a kind, made by hand in my studio in Incline Village, Lake Tahoe. Part of the Tahoe series, 2022.
