Hand-knotted in wool, this 4x4 square rug has been inspired by antique Chinese pictorial rugs—specifically animal rugs with mythological references of the most regal look.
On the Design:
This particular design recaptures a Kirin (or “Qilin” in some spellings), as seen by the creature with dragon-like and lion-like features in the central field. That same beast is surrounded by ruyi clouds, lotus floral motifs and other traditional patterns. The scene looks to depict a Kirin surrounded by a storm, befitting of both its choice of dark blues beside the gold tones as well as the symbolism of Kirins throughout history as agents of divine change.
