Hand-knotted in high-quality wool, this 3x3 Modern Classics square rug by Rug & Kilim is directly inspired by the rich history of antique Chinese Art Deco rugs and similar Chinoiserie designs from the iconic movement of the same name in the 1920s.

On the Design:

This square accent rug is a vibrant celebration of the ""Golden Age"" of weaving, where the bold lines of Western modernism met the delicate symbolism of the East. The field is saturated in a luminous, candy-pink hue—a daring color choice that perfectly encapsulates the playful yet opulent spirit of Chinese Art Deco interiors during the Jazz Age.

The composition artfully balances negative space with lush, pictorial motifs, featuring oversized peonies in shades of cream, sky blue, and charcoal grey that appear to bloom from the corners. Adding a structured counterpoint to the organic floral elements is a stylized, interrupted Greek Key border in a deep chocolate brown. This geometric frame provides an architectural ""skyscraper"" feel, a hallmark of the Chinese Art Deco aesthetic that lends the piece a sense of grounded sophistication. Every detail, from the painterly shading of the leaves to the crispness of the fretwork, honors the vintage craft while offering a refreshed, contemporary energy for modern spaces.

A Legacy of Excellence Since the Beginning

Rug & Kilim is a New York–based institution devoted to the art of rugs, kilims, and tapestries. Founded in 1980 by Jahanshah “Josh” Nazmiyal, we began as a humble family workshop and have grown into one of the most respected authorities in the field—without ever losing the intimacy and integrity that define our boutique ethos. For over four decades, we’ve served collectors, designers, and connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, soul, and above all, rarity.

In 1989, Rug & Kilim celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its second store in Morristown, New Jersey. The business quickly established itself as a national source for the finest Oriental rugs, offering a wide-ranging collection from Persia, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Russia, and China. Known for its expertise, curated selection, and exceptional customer service, Rug & Kilim became synonymous with quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of color and design. The firm’s commitment to placing rare and distinguished pieces in homes and collections across the country has remained at the heart of its philosophy for decades.
