The Hashi is a Calacatta Viola marble coffee table, a low, quiet table that lets the material carry it. It is built to be looked at, the marble given room while everything around it stays deliberately spare.
Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy, and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. Each top is unique to the block it came from, and no two of these Calacatta Viola marble coffee tables are ever quite alike.
The base is the quieter feat. Two slabs of the same marble are notched and set at right angles, one passing through the other, so the coffee table carries itself with no brackets and no visible fixing. What holds the piece up is exactly what draws the eye, an interlocking cross-leg join left plain as the only ornament the design permits.
