Northern Lights
Northern Lights is an abstract interpretation of the mysterious beauty of the northern sky. Across the four connected canvases of 40 x 30cm each, flowing lines and layered forms move through a, dark ground, recalling ribbons of light travelling across a night sky. Emerald, turquoise, olive, and pale gold appear to glow against the darkness.
The painting balances stillness with movement. Some passages are delicate and almost weightless, while others gather into stronger waves of colour and energy. The fine marks suggest the changing patterns of the aurora, where light seems to appear, dissolve and reform. Rather than depicting the phenomenon literally, the work captures its atmosphere of silence, mystery and wonder.
The polyptych format allows the movement to travel from one canvas to the next, while the divisions create visual pauses. Northern Lights becomes a meditation on light emerging from darkness, inviting the viewer to discover subtle changes in colour, texture and rhythm.
