The Ishiki is a Calacatta Viola marble coffee table, a low, round table chosen as much for the history of its stone as for its colour. Its presence is architectural rather than decorative, the marble left to lead while the base beneath it works quietly.
Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy, and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. Every top is cut from its own block, and no two of these Calacatta Viola marble coffee tables are ever quite alike.
Beneath the top, the making is all economy. Two panels of the same marble meet perpendicular and lock together into a self-supporting cross-leg base, one slotting through the other, the join left in open view as the single detail the design allows itself.
As a Calacatta Viola marble coffee table it holds a room quietly, as at ease in a living room as anywhere. The Ishiki is an Italian coffee table made to order in Cantù, in Lombardy's long-established furniture district, drawn from a palette of full-slab stone, solid timber, and premium Italian glass.
