cold porcelain, tempered glass. 48" x 36" x 3". This work is part of a series of portraits of Latin American women who fought in the wars of independence, for the federalization of countries, and the rights of native peoples. But history has made them invisible. Only a few names remained. Bringing back these names is to name us all.
I am interested in Remedios del Valle, called La Capitana because she gathers in her person as much strength as precariousness.
A woman who had been enslaved, subjected to abuse, and marginalized by her origin. I reconstruct her identity by crafting numerous braids, coils, and magnolias. Braids in Latin America are a symbol of femininity and resistance. I use porcelain, charcoal, and small pieces of broken tempered glass as alchemy that generates change.
