This original hand-carved sculpture is rendered in mottled alabaster — a naturally patterned stone whose swirling mix of warm taupe, grey, brown, and creamy white veining gives the piece an almost geological drama that no two stones could replicate. Standing 24 inches tall, it is the most monumental of forms: a tightly coiled figure that wraps and folds in on itself, limbs and torso becoming indistinguishable in a continuous spiral of interlocking rounded volumes.
Where the darker mottled exterior dominates the outer surfaces, glimpses of pale creamy alabaster emerge in the interior recesses and sheltered hollows — as though the figure contains a luminous interior world within its earthen shell. This interplay between the stone's dark exterior and glowing interior is not incidental; it feels essential to the work's meaning, suggesting protection, interiority, and vulnerability held within strength.
The piece reads differently from every angle — a coiled serpentine form from one side, an embracing figure from another, a dense knot of energy from above. Fine linear tool marks appear in the transitional passages between forms, preserving the handmade character of the work against the highly polished lobes.
At two feet tall this is a genuine statement piece, substantial enough for a floor placement or a large plinth, yet intimate enough in its subject to draw viewers close.
