This original hand-carved sculpture is rendered in African Wonderstone, a rare South African pyrophyllite prized by sculptors for its deep charcoal color, fine grain, and exceptional workability. Standing 14 inches tall and 4 inches wide, the piece presents an abstracted seated figure — voluminous rounded forms in the lower body give way to a dynamic, fragmented upper section where bold interlocking planes and dramatic negative space create energy and movement.
The surface treatment shifts intentionally across the piece: the lower torso carries a soft, matte brushed finish that catches light gently, while the upper forms reveal a higher polish that deepens the near-black tone of the stone. A fine linear texture detail at the waist adds a subtle handcrafted mark amid the otherwise sculptural forms.
The work sits in dialogue with the modernist figurative tradition — echoing sensibilities of Henry Moore and Hans Arp — while remaining entirely its own voice.
