Every piece in this portfolio was built entirely by hand."Every table carries an inscription burned or written on the underside — client name, completion date, maker's mark. When this furniture passes to the next generation, as it is built to do, the story of its making travels with it."
No table saw. No planer. No jointer. No router. No power of any kind beyond the craftsman's eye, his understanding of the material, and tools that would have been familiar to a furniture maker two centuries ago.
The reclaimed barnwood begins as rough sawn material pulled from Western New York barns scheduled for demolition. It is hand sawn to dimension, hand planed to surface, hand scraped to finish. Mortises are chopped by hand chisel. Tenons are cut by hand saw and fitted by hand plane. Every joint in every piece was made by a human hand making a considered decision rather than a machine making a precise repetition.
The result is furniture that carries something no CNC router or power tool can introduce — the evidence of judgment. The slight variation in a hand planed surface that catches light differently across its length. The mortise wall that shows the chisel's entry angle. The tenon shoulder fitted to its specific mortise and no other.
These are not reproduction antiques. They are new furniture built by old methods from genuinely old material. The barnwood brings a century of agricultural history. The hand tool process brings a continuity of craft tradition that predates industrialization entirely.
Available for commission. Each piece is designed and built to the specific requirements of the client and the character of the available material. No two pieces are identical because the material and the process together ensure they cannot be.
It's very labor intensive, Easily 150hours.Probably more. I always forget to keep an accurate log. I get lost in the process and let it happen at it's own pace. Lead times are longer for these pieces but if you are looking for the real " Hand Crafted" deal, I'm offering it. At 68,I'm not sure how many more of these builds are in me. Ha. Contact me for full details and inquiries. The listed price is a rough estimate depending on size, style and number of benches and chairs, of course.
Lead times and pricing varies depending on size and style of course.
