Gilt & Silver Pheasants is a c.1920 Chinese carved panel featuring a pair of long-tailed pheasants among lush foliage, worked in a rare combination of gilding and silver leaf. The dual-metal finish has aged into a beautifully textured, mottled patina over a century — the gold and silver now live together as a single, quiet surface rather than two separate colors.
This is a surviving architectural salvage fragment from a traditional timber-framed structure. The hand-carved relief is deep and assured, with the pheasants' feathers and the surrounding blossoms rendered in crisp detail. The wear and tonal variation are not flaws, but the fingerprints of time — a surface that cannot be replicated today. Mounted on a solid wood backplate with a 2 cm floatig gap, the carving casts soft shadows that shift through the day.
