Four Agapanthus Flowers: 30 x 22.5" original cyanotype
The agapanthus flower is native to South Africa. I have a hundred appear in my garden in California each summer. Though these monotypes look like woodcuts or screen prints, they are actually a form of photography called a cyanotype.
Same 18 x 36-inch size and same shade of blue as "Midnight Olive Trees." (I think I took one photo while one print was still wet and the other when it was dry).
Though this monoprint looks like a woodcut or screen print, this is actually a nineteenth century method of photography called a cyanotype, "cyan" meaning blue in Greek. Every botanical print is entirely unique made using fresh cut branches laid in that exact composition on the hand-coated light-sensitive paper only once. My botanical cyanotypes are each one-of-a-kind slow cameraless photographs made outdoors using natural sunlight. There is no lens, no plastic photo negative, no ink, etched plate, carved block or printing press.
