On the cusp of summer, I have returned to painting on canvas after a long period without a studio. There is nothing more hopeful than a sunrise. A new day.
This is a continuation of my 2021 ‘Daybreak’ series of tree silhouettes at dawn. This one is in shades of shell pink and gray. There are others in shades of straw yellow and gray and pink and plum.
The color of the under layer, the gray here, was applied very thinly before painting the sky. The pale pink sky allows for a hint of the darker color to show through giving a quiet sort of vibration. The painting is essentially a painting of negative space much in the way a woodcut is made by carving away all that is not the subject.
