Every new year at the stroke of midnight, Ecuadorians celebrate the “Año Viejo” by burning effigies representing political figures and pop culture icons. The burning of these effigies is symbolic of cleansing negative energies brought on by the past year’s regrets, frustrations, and misfortunes. The tradition sets a precedent for a new year of joy and good fortune.
