The Cocoon takes its name from the gentle, tapered form created by hundreds of small clay beads shaped by hand in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Each bead is crafted individually by women artisans, giving the finished piece a rhythm and surface character that could only come from human touch. The beads are arranged to create a soft, vertical flow that shifts subtly as the piece grows from its narrow neck to its rounded base.
When lit, the Cocoon reveals pockets of light between the beads, creating a quiet, atmospheric shimmer rather than a single directional glow. This makes it an inviting option for spaces that benefit from warm, layered lighting—lounges, bedrooms, intimate dining areas, and hospitality environments. As a pendant, it draws the eye upward with its tall silhouette. As a floor lamp, it stands as a sculptural object even when the light is off.
By choosing the Cocoon, you’re supporting a rural craft economy and helping preserve a unique clay-bead technique rooted in South African handwork.
