CHARYBDIS was carved from Virginia soapstone and mounted on a small marble base. The name comes from Greek mythology referring to a whirlpool that pulled ships down to the watery depths. There is a companion piece titled SCYLLA referring to a sea monster from the same Greek myth which is the basis for the phrase "Between the devil and the deep blue sea".

Meet the Creator
Wescover creator since 2019
I strive to create sightlines through stone, a chance to see something unseen for millions of years.

I'm professionally trained as an engineer and I've been carving stone for over 20 years. In 2006 I formed Rock and A Soft Place studios with my artist wife so we could focus full time on our respective artforms, stonecarving for me and fiber artwork for her. I create artworks from many stone types, with a preference for marble, ranging in size from small handheld pieces to multi ton boulders.
