Rita first learned about the Toronto Caribbean Carnival on the news. It is an annual event starting in July with major events in August. Every year she likes to create paintings to mark this special event.

My name is Rita. I have Down syndrome. Come see my world of color and imagination. I paint original watercolors that will make you smile!

Rita Winkler was born in 1987 with Down syndrome in Calgary, Alberta, and lived there until 2003 when the family moved to Toronto after the death of Rita's father Jay. As a child, she learned some sign language to compensate for delayed speech. After graduation from high school, Rita went to DANI, an organization which is helping people with disabilities. In the past few years, Rita flourished as an artist, painting how she sees life through her own eyes. Alongside creating paintings, she also likes to paint birthday cakes and create birthday cards.

In 2021, a publishing company approached her family, and with the help of her mother, Helen Winkler, and her uncle, Mark Winkler, from New York, they co-authored an educational picture book entitled, My Art, My World. https://www.ritawinkler.art/my-book/ The book shows how she views her life through paintings and teaches inclusion. The book received positive reviews, including a star in Kirkus Reviews.

Completely pleased with the original painting "Moon and Stars for Friends" by Rita Winkler. The computer does not do her talent justice. Like much of her work this expressionistic water color piece comes straight frame her heart in a dreamy playful landscape of rich vibrant pigments which seem to defy color theory by creating harmonious relationships between shades and tints that would normally clash. The effect is delightful and inspiring. The natural white linen substrate provides warmth and texture while holding the color like a new lover. The finish is matte except for a constellation of dancing iridescent stars and moons that seem to float off the page catching just enough light to make you look twice. A subtle effect that adds a touch of movement and a dash of bling. The standard smooth black beveled wood frame is classic and its width along with the white mat border spacing are just right to draw attention to the piece without over powering the art.

I have been a fan of Rita Winkler's art for the past couple of years with a few of her paintings already hanging in my home. She is one of my favorite artists...I love her use of color, the way she sees the world and tells a story through her art. Her paintings make my home happier and more beautiful and I am so glad to be able to purchase from such an impressive selection on this website, Wescover! I think art should mean something, tell a story and with Rita Winkler's work you get that. Seeing the World through Rita's eyes and art gives my friends and guest great joy. This piece hangs in my study, I've given many of her animal prints as gifts to new parents and friends. There is something magical about the World she creates.
