OVAL 2 Encaustic wall sculpture collage of reclaimed wood.
The surface of Oval 2 Encaustic this process is further enhanced by applying several layers of natural wax (a mixture of beeswax and carnauba wax) colored with pigments and mica powder. The result is a surface that is comparable to molten glass, really incredible to see.

This artwork belongs to our new series of wall art installations FORM & COLOR.
This series plays with textures, shapes and colors to create a sculptural piece of great impact and modernist elegance, with a marked Brutalist sensibility.
Reclaimed wood elements are combined in striking zigzag patterns to create a dramatic and elegant shadow play, framed by the piece’s specific form and highlighted by the matte finish of the pigment.
Once the composition has been determined, the elements secured in place and cut to the chosen shape, each piece is lacquered with different shades of paint and pigments to create a great depth of color.
The panel comes with its own invisible French cleat hanging system.

Reclaimed wood; birch multiplex; acrylic paint; pigment.

CARE AND INSTALLATION GUIDE
Please avoid touching the artworks with your bare hands, as the oils, fats, and acids present on your skin can damage the surface of the artwork.
Even though the works are varnished, it is recommended to prevent touching them. When installing the artwork, please use white cotton gloves.
Take care not to scuff or rub the artwork during installation, even when wearing gloves.
We recommend using the provided French Cleat mounting system for installation.
This system evenly distributes the weight, ensures the artwork remains flat against the wall, and provides a stable and sturdy installation. Use wall anchors as needed to secure the wall part of the cleat.
To clean the artwork, gently dust it off with antistatic cloth. Do not use detergents, moisture, cleaning agents, or any other cleaning tools or cloths.
Avoid exposing the artwork to water at all times to prevent it from water damage.
It is advisable to avoid hanging or placing the artwork near direct heat sources or in areas where excessive sunlight can cause overheating.

Studio DeSimoneWayland are Marcello De Simone (Italian) and Bruce Wayland (American).

Since 2010 Marcello and Bruce operate as a design and ceramics studio based in Amsterdam, experimenting with the language of ceramic plates in combination with textiles.

The rich history and diverse forms of tableware serve as the foundational starting point of their extensive research, but it is the forms themselves—the various shapes and the combinations of these shapes in complex compositions—that constitute the core of their artistic practice.
These shapes are regarded as both a canvas and a sculptural element, and they are combined with textiles as a means to introduce additional texture and to enhance their inherent sculptural qualities.

Their acclaimed series, Altered Perspectives, represents a unique marriage between distinct ceramic pieces and paintings on canvas, resulting in a three-dimensional composition where the imagery is intentionally fragmented across the different forms.

For more than twelve years, Studio DeSimoneWayland have conducted an extensive research in mould making for slip-cast ceramics, introducing the texture of fabric and embroidery to a medium which is mostly used for smooth forms.
Throughout these years, this challenging process has pushed them to create pieces in colourful stoneware and fine porcelain to transform shapes into detailed sculptural works of art and functional ceramics.

This research has produced their series, From a Different Cloth and Soft Porcelain, highlighting their signature textile structure layered onto the ceramics, with some textiles showcasing exquisite monogram embroideries that add an extra layer of depth and aesthetic detail.

In Soft Porcelain textures from antique linens, including family monograms are combined with Mont Blanc porcelain.
The resulting effects create softly draped forms, revealing the liminal space between art and design, old and new, and evoking family history by way of the monograms.

In 2022 Studio DeSimoneWayland were included in the prestigious Homo Faber Guide of the best artist- makers, and in September 2024 they participated to the Homo Faber: The Journey of Life exhibition at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.

In 2025 Studio DeSimoneWayland became partners of the Craft Council Nederland.
They participated in Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven from 18 to 26 October 2025 in an exhibition curated by the Craft Council with a piece that spells the word PEACE by way of embroidered capital letters on five platters created for the exhibition.
The use of capital letters and monogram embroidery to spell text in their work marks a new direction, and opens up many possibilities to create a dialog with the viewer through words.

In 2025 Studio DeSimoneWayland were accepted as members of the prestigious AIC International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva, Switzerland
