Brünnhilde - Prints
Price from £25 to £178
Woman Owned
Brünnhilde the Cat started life as a 1936 photograph by Adolph Edward Weidhaas. A plucky tabby kitted out as the Valkyrie heroine from Wagner's Ring Cycle. The black-and-white photo has been floating around the internet for years, and Catherine Hébert finally gave it the full colour treatment it deserved.Every detail from the photograph is here. The fierce sideways stare, the slightly unimpressed expression, the confident posture of a cat who knows she's in charge. But now you get golden scale mail catching the light, a deep red cape draped over one shoulder, and that plumed helm glowing warm against a rich green background. She looks like she's about to storm Valhalla or knock your water glass off the table. Probably both. The painting is based on a real photograph from nearly 90 years ago. Someone actually dressed their cat in a tiny Valkyrie costume in 1936, and honestly, we owe them everything.
