One of the more common subjects in sculpture, both by contemporary and historical figure sculptors, is Abraham Lincoln. Hardly surprising, as he embodied many admirable qualities that still resonate today. From his humble beginnings, he learned the importance of humility, standing up for the vulnerable, and the significance of hard work. As he matured, these traits became integral to his character and ultimately led him to become the 16th President of the United States. They served as his compass during the Civil War. They also guided him in his efforts to liberate the slaves, first through his Emancipation Proclamation and later with the passage of the 13th Amendment. Moreover, he was also a man of deep thoughtfulness. A great example of this was his reply to a letter from an 11-year-old girl, sent to him just prior to his election as President. In her letter, she remarked that he appeared too gaunt to be elected and suggested that he should grow a beard, as all the ladies favored bearded men. She even mentioned that some of her brothers would support him if he took her advice. My sculpture of Abraham Lincoln shows him before he grew his beard out, a less common portrait of a man who would become our 16th President.
