Lutz Hornischer - Sculptures in Wood & Plaster

Berkeley, CA

"Abstract sculptures from reclaimed wood and plaster"
Lutz Hornischer is an abstract artist and sculptor working in the San Francisco Bay Area. His sculptures and wall art are inspired by nature, life, and the uniqueness of the reclaimed wood he uses. He enjoys the specific challenge of transforming an old and rustic material such as reclaimed redwood into contemporary sculptures and fine art. In his work, he leverages the architectural qualities of the wood by laminating wood boards into larger blocks, sculpting organic shapes, and exploring dynamic grain and natural color patterns. The old wood he is using has scratches, cracks, knots, and other imperfections that are similar to real life. Every piece of wood is like a person, with its unique character, challenges, and strengths. Lutz yearns to give the wood a new life and he hopes his sculptures and wall art inspire people to find new awareness, purpose, and joy in their own life.
Always exploring new materials, he recently I started to work with plaster influenced by ancient Greek and Italian artwork. The elegance, flow and smoothness of ancient marble sculptures inspired him to create abstract work with similar qualities using layers of sculpted paper covered with plaster. He was intrigued by combining the thin and fragile qualities of paper with the sturdy and hard surface qualities of plaster.

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"After carving and sanding I still don’t know how the final piece will look like. Only after I apply the linseed oil, the piece really comes to life with its vibrant natural colors, flowing grain lines and unique imperfections of the reclaimed wood. So, there is a lot of surprise and uncertainty in my work, which I enjoy, and so far I was not let down, simply because wood is a natural material, and nature is just beautiful."

Q&A

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"I want to surprise and create an emotional connection with my work. When I tell people that my work is made out of old fence boards they are surprised that there is so much beauty hidden inside that old wood. They emotionally connect with my work because they see nature in my pieces, both in the material and the organic shapes of my work."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"The unexpected surprise: While working on a large sculpture, cut-off pieces of wood accumulated on the floor of my studio. One day, I noticed the scattered pieces forming a wave. I put the pieces on a table and played with them for a while, then I started gluing them together in a wave-like shape and eventually carved them. This first wall sculpture “The Wave” resulted into a completely new series (Nature) with over 30 artworks."
