Reclaimed redwood on steel plate (set of two sculptures)
20 x 10 x 4 inches

These two sculptures (sold together) are each made from 32 pieces of reclaimed redwood. The pieces are carefully laminated, carved, sanded and finished with linseed oil to bring out the beautiful natural colors of the wood. The wood pieces feature little imperfections, cracks and nail holes that remember the times the wood was used in old buildings. I personally enjoy using this old and imperfect wood to make flowing, elegant and contemporary sculptures. Both pieces are sold together because they provide endless possibilities to arrange and re-arrange them. The sculptures are from my “Curly” series and I was inspired by the product naming convention of IKEA - so I named them Koerly I and II.

Abstract sculptures from reclaimed wood and plaster

Lutz Hornischer is an abstract artist and sculptor working in the San Francisco Bay Area. His sculptures and wall art are inspired by nature, life, and the uniqueness of the reclaimed wood he uses. He enjoys the specific challenge of transforming an old and rustic material such as reclaimed redwood into contemporary sculptures and fine art. In his work, he leverages the architectural qualities of the wood by laminating wood boards into larger blocks, sculpting organic shapes, and exploring dynamic grain and natural color patterns. The old wood he is using has scratches, cracks, knots, and other imperfections that are similar to real life. Every piece of wood is like a person, with its unique character, challenges, and strengths. Lutz yearns to give the wood a new life and he hopes his sculptures and wall art inspire people to find new awareness, purpose, and joy in their own life.
Always exploring new materials, he recently I started to work with plaster influenced by ancient Greek and Italian artwork. The elegance, flow and smoothness of ancient marble sculptures inspired him to create abstract work with similar qualities using layers of sculpted paper covered with plaster. He was intrigued by combining the thin and fragile qualities of paper with the sturdy and hard surface qualities of plaster.
