TITLE: SCALES TILES
DESCRIPTION: are modular wall hanging decorative hand painted wooden tiles. They can stand alone as single a piece and also look beautiful as a grouping.
These tiles evoke the sensation of being underwater. This underwater realm in Hawaii is ruled by Namaka, the Hawaiian ocean Goddess. She is the older sister of Pele, Hawaiian Volcano Goddess, and as Pele is crowned in smoke and heat, Namaka is adorned with the lovely glittery quicksilver of reef fish and the pelagic wanderers of the deep.
My art comes to me through visualizations and meditations. Living in Hawaii being so close to the Ocean, I can feel her presence speak to me. I see my art as a way to be an interpreter of energies and experiences rather than a literal rendering of a person, place or thing. These Scales are how I interpret and imagine how she would be adorned and choose to cloth herself.
HOW THEY ARE MADE: Mixed Media paintings on Sculpted Wood Panels. Each Scale is cut and carved from birch wood panel, painted within 7 to 9 layers of wax pigments, metallic art foils, india ink, oil paint, and art resin.
PLEASE NOTE: Each scale or set of scales will have variations in color, tone, detail. Unless specified, you will receive a set that is similar to these images.
