Carved poplar plywood
174” x 803.5”

The space offered at the college, through the long corridor and the grand foyer, is double and unique; double in its dimensions and functions, unique by its majestic architecture that embraces the exterior garden and its natural elements. The artist thus chose to use two different techniques that may be seen here, frottage drawing and carved plywood.

Carved plywood, consisting of different formats, presents various vertical architectural lines of the wall. They accentuate the rhythm in symbiosis with the architecture. Wood an organic element, crosses the transparency of the window to rejoin the beauty of the exterior garden.

The viewer finds themselves in the presence of a singular environment were architecture, frottage drawing, carved plywood and garden converge in a single work of art.

Montreal based artist Yechel Gagnon, creates signature style plywood bas reliefs.
A technique she developped more than 20 years ago, using at the time a simple sheet of plywood. This material has captivated her and continues to compel her to seek its potential, its mystery and all of its expressive facets. Over the last decade, she has developed her own technique of creating custom made plywood with tinted, natural & exotic veneers. Resulting in a fascinating array of colours, nuances and textures. Gagnon’s artistic practice also encompasses embossed prints, frottage drawings, etchings, cast-aluminium works and large-scale architectural installations. Engaging different media has allowed her to nurture a fluid, dialogical process capable of informing and renewing itself across disciplines.
