Pressed flower petals on canvas, polyurethane varnish
2021
H: 40" x W: 30" x D: 2”
On-going series of self-portraits made of pressed flower petals. The collages emphasize both our ultimate connection with our natural environment, we are made of the same things, as well as the idea of releasing control as a way to reconnect with our deepest selves. Like the Surrealists’ automatic writing or drawing, my process with this series is intuitive and improvised, without any pre-conception of what the resulting composition will be. The mirroring effect as the only constraint, accentuates the irregularities and the human touch despite the "automatic" repetition. In-between nature and culture, human-altered and symbolically potent, flowers in my work speak of our disconnection with the natural world, with the feminine and with our own human nature, its carnal and finite qualities.

Using real flower petals, my work questions our disconnection with the natural world. We are nature.
