A deep ceramic plate, 28 cm across, made for chef Joanna Brayanova and her dish in episode 4 of Materia Mensa, our film series about clay and cooking.

The wide rim is textured by hand while the clay is still soft, in dense, uneven lines that recall moss, bark or the underside of a leaf. The green glaze is brushed on by hand and pools darker in the grooves, so the rim has depth and changes with the light. No two rims are the same.

Inside, the well is smooth, white and deep. It holds broths, sauces and pasta and keeps the food framed in the centre. In the episode it carried tortellini in a light broth with pickled onion and fresh leaves.

Each plate is made by hand in our studio in Sofia and stamped underneath.

Size: Ø 28 cm. Other sizes and glaze colours on request.

Made to order in our studio in Sofia for restaurants, hotels and cafés. Minimum order: 8 pieces per item. Send us an inquiry with your project and quantities for timing and a quote. Price shown is per piece.

Handmade porcelain tableware, designed in Sofia with an architect's eye.

Pottery & Poetry is a design studio in Sofia, Bulgaria, founded by architect Maria Baleva, M.Arch. Fifteen years of architectural practice shape how she designs for the table: proportion, colour and the way a piece is used every day. A team of eight shapes and glazes every plate, bowl and cup by hand in our studio, so no two pieces are exactly alike.

Our collections include Color, Bauhaus, Sgraffito and Calassi wine vessels. The Bauhaus collection is on show at Artipelag, Stockholm, as part of the exhibition Inner Child until April 2027.

We also design and make custom tableware for restaurants, hotels and shops, from a single glaze to a complete service.
