MOTTLED Side Table — Black, by Donatas Zukauskas
A sculptural stone side table with a distinctive hourglass silhouette — sturdy at its base, refined at its waist, and finished in a deep matte black that emphasises the texture of the composite surface. The MOTTLED table merges archaism and modernity without resolving the tension between them: it is simultaneously elemental and precise, raw and considered. More than a surface for placing objects, it becomes a focal point within any room.
The material is developed through years of personal experimentation: recycled paper pulp and cardboard — the second life of wood — combined with organic cement, binders, and paint to produce a composite that looks like cast stone but behaves differently. It is lighter than real concrete, slightly elastic rather than brittle, and sealed for long-term indoor durability. Donatas calls it the third life of wood: a material given entirely new properties through process.
Rather than concealing the marks of making, the MOTTLED table wears them as character. Surface variation, texture, and subtle tonal shifts are built into the design — imperfection as a way to create beauty.
