"We weave our music, we replay our cassette tapes"
J. J. Chuan is a Singapore-based artist and designer whose practice bridges sustainability, material innovation and social design. A graduate of Parsons The New School of Design, she has lived and worked in Singapore, Malaysia, New York and Shanghai, shaping a multi-local perspective that informs her creative work.

She is best known for pioneering MusicCloth®, a textile woven from discarded cassette and video tapes developed through her upcycling initiative Rehyphen®. By transforming obsolete materials into a new artistic medium, Chuan challenges perceptions of waste while opening conversations on value, memory and sustainability.

Her contributions have earned her international recognition, including being named one of Kevin McCloud’s Top 7 Green Heroes (2018 & 2019), inclusion in the Red Dot Design Museum’s global social design showcase (2020), and recognition as one of Singapore’s Inspiring Women Leaders by City Developments Limited (2020).
