The White Melo Sconce Wall Light is a handmade ceramic wall sconce by UK-based artist Catalin Filip — a stoneware form draped over a wooden peg, its soft collapse held at exactly the moment the clay found its shape. The piece reads differently in every light: unlit, a grounded object with quiet material presence; switched on, a warm halo that spills downward and settles across the wall.
Each piece in the Melo collection begins as a simple cylinder of stoneware. Left to respond to gravity, the wet clay sags, folds, and settles into a form no drawing could have anticipated. Filip dries it quickly — at exactly the moment the material finds its shape — fixing the movement permanently into something stone-like and still.
The textured natural exterior holds the character of raw stoneware — matte, earth-toned, honest. Inside, a cream speckled glaze catches and diffuses warmth, casting soft ambient light that moves between task lighting and atmosphere without announcing itself.
The sconce suits residential and boutique commercial interiors equally. It can be hardwired into a standard electrical box or fitted with a cord and switch for plug-in use. Compatible with 110–130V and 220–230V systems.
Catalin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based ceramicist and designer who develops his techniques through intuitive experimentation and trial and error. Self-taught in clay, he brings an architectural eye to functional sculpture — making objects that balance process and purpose.

A self-taught ceramicist who bends, pulls, and stretches raw clay — capturing the movement of natural forces in stone-like, functional sculpture.

Cătălin Filip (b. 1989) is a Romanian-born, UK-based artist and designer specialising in ceramic art. Growing up in post-communist Romania, he experienced a time of creative tension: newfound freedoms allowed for artistic expression, but limited resources compelled artists to be inventive. This environment fostered a spirit of experimentation and a deep appreciation for alternative processes that continues to define his practice.
Filip makes sculptural ceramic lamps and object installations inspired by the natural responses of raw clay to forces such as gravity. By bending, pulling, and stretching the material, he captures the fluidity and movement of clay, transforming it into stone-like finished forms. His work echoes the organic distortions found in nature — carved hills, wind-bent trees, the dynamic forces that shape the world. Each piece retains traces of its own making.
A self-taught ceramicist, he approaches clay as a medium for discovery, developing techniques through patient trial and error. His background in architecture adds a complementary focus on structure and design, enabling him to create work that balances artistic expression with functional purpose. Since moving to the UK in 2014 he has settled in St Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast of England. His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, and Mexico, and at the British Ceramics Biennale, where he received the Fresh Talent Prize. He has been named an Emerging Artist by Ceramic Review (2023) and featured in Elle Decoration, House & Garden, and We The Cool Magazine.
