Made with handwoven wool circa 1950-1960, this 4x4 vintage square flat-weave Sofreh Kilim is a particularly meditative and sought-after work of an exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim’s collection of classic kilims and flatweaves.

On the Design:

This elegant Sofreh is a masterful study in negative space and quiet symmetry, reflecting a rich history of textiles used in intimate dining and seating areas. Sofreh Kilims were often smaller, like this piece, and are revered for their durable charm and clear design philosophy. This example favors the open field design, dominated by a vast, calming canvas of soft, warm natural tan or camel. While primarily open, the field is gently punctuated by a layered diamond medallion at the center, and four smaller eye-shaped devices (<i>nazar</i>), serving as quiet tribal motifs for protection. The rug is dramatically framed by a complex border system: an inner band of bold saw-tooth serrations and an outer band of intricate, polychromatic geometric motifs in deep chocolate and sienna. This contrast between the dense, protective frame and the serene, uncluttered interior makes the piece an exceptional example of sophisticated tribal minimalism.

Condition:

This vintage kilim further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage.

A Legacy of Excellence Since the Beginning

Rug & Kilim is a New York–based institution devoted to the art of rugs, kilims, and tapestries. Founded in 1980 by Jahanshah “Josh” Nazmiyal, we began as a humble family workshop and have grown into one of the most respected authorities in the field—without ever losing the intimacy and integrity that define our boutique ethos. For over four decades, we’ve served collectors, designers, and connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, soul, and above all, rarity.

In 1989, Rug & Kilim celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its second store in Morristown, New Jersey. The business quickly established itself as a national source for the finest Oriental rugs, offering a wide-ranging collection from Persia, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Russia, and China. Known for its expertise, curated selection, and exceptional customer service, Rug & Kilim became synonymous with quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of color and design. The firm’s commitment to placing rare and distinguished pieces in homes and collections across the country has remained at the heart of its philosophy for decades.
