Hand-woven in wool, circa 1950-1960, this 2x4 vintage Afghan kilim is a rich tribal piece that may have been used as table covers in nomadic daily life, much similar to Persian Sofreh Kilims.

On the Design:

A striking relic of tribal artistry, this vintage Afghan kilim evokes an archaic sensibility infused with quiet strength. Its construction, particularly robust for a flatweave, bears the kind of enduring beauty that only time bestows. Woven in a compelling polychromatic palette, the rug balances deep earthy tones with accents of red, blue, and green, creating a sophisticated dialogue between geometry and color. It features a beige field punctuated by a rhythmic procession of serrated arrow-like motifs—sharp, symmetrical, and steeped in ancient symbolism. Though modest in size, its design vocabulary speaks volumes, offering immense versatility—ideal not only as a table runner or narrow accent piece but also as a wall-hung textile for those curating tactile, heritage-driven interiors. A testament to Baluch tribal sensibilities and artisanal resilience, this kilim exhibits an old-world charm and has aged beautifully in kind.

Condition:

This vintage Afghan kilim enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

A Legacy of Excellence Since the Beginning

Rug & Kilim is a New York–based institution devoted to the art of rugs, kilims, and tapestries. Founded in 1980 by Jahanshah “Josh” Nazmiyal, we began as a humble family workshop and have grown into one of the most respected authorities in the field—without ever losing the intimacy and integrity that define our boutique ethos. For over four decades, we’ve served collectors, designers, and connoisseurs who value craftsmanship, soul, and above all, rarity.

In 1989, Rug & Kilim celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its second store in Morristown, New Jersey. The business quickly established itself as a national source for the finest Oriental rugs, offering a wide-ranging collection from Persia, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Russia, and China. Known for its expertise, curated selection, and exceptional customer service, Rug & Kilim became synonymous with quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of color and design. The firm’s commitment to placing rare and distinguished pieces in homes and collections across the country has remained at the heart of its philosophy for decades.
