The Urchin wall sconce radiates from the centre like a living organism, its surface built from dozens of small clay elements shaped individually by women artisans in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Each piece is rolled, refined, and fired by hand before being set into the sconce’s circular form, creating a textured landscape that changes character as the light moves across it.
When illuminated, the Urchin throws a soft halo onto the wall, with light slipping between the contours of the clay pieces to create a dimensional, almost celestial glow. The effect is both calm and dramatic — a sculptural piece that functions as lighting and art simultaneously.
