'Unphased' is an American Bison (Buffalo) who is unaffected while traversing a harsh wind and snow covered mountain slope. This piece was inspired by a trip to the Northern Rocky Mountains in the fall of 2024. I set out to combine steel, rust, and hardwood to capture the presence of one of North America’s most formidable animals.
Entirely handcrafted—without paint or CNC processes—the work began weeks in advance as I developed natural rust on the steel. Additional patinas and oxides were applied to deepen contrast and create tonal variation.
The piece projects nearly two inches from the wall, allowing for sculptural contouring that defines the animal’s musculature and the texture of its dense hide.
