It has often been commented that the floor at République tricks your eye like an Escher painting. The owners used 5,000 cement tiles to achieve the effect. The black, green and cream pattern also warms up the cavernous space.

Meet the Creator

"Granada Tile makes eco-friendly, handmade cement tiles using a technique developed 150 years ago in France. Marcos Cajina and Melanie Stephens fell in love with these style tiles on a 2000 visit to Grenada, Nicaragua, a stunning colonial city bursting with historic cement tiles from the early 1900s.

They went to France to learn the technique then came back and set up shop in Grenada, starting a factory that makes the eco-friendly, sensational cement tiles. "Not only are these handmade cement tiles strong, durable and scratch and stain resistant, they have a vintage beauty that can be very versatile," says Marcos. "The tiles’ bold patterns and dynamic colors can look just as beautiful in a historic mansion as in a new loft."

You may have seen them at chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Beverly Hills or at 1534, a hip bar underneath Jacques restaurant in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.
