This piece was inspired by Toko Shinoda, a Japanese artist whose work merged traditional calligraphy with modern abstract expressionism. For this piece, no details were missed. The blue washi paper was carefully creased to create a sheer and delicate watercolour effect. Additionally, I cut thin lines into the black paper to create a “brush stroke” effect. The intention is for the piece to feel loose in form, invoking a sense of spaciousness and freedom.
“ My works are all delicate — just one little part keeps it all together. If one line went just a bit wrong, if the color were a little darker, it would not be what I was trying to show. My works are all like that. They are fragile.”
-Toko Shinoda
Fact about Toko: Her work was honoured on a postage stamp in Japan. She never married- considering herself "married to her work".
