In The Mustard Tree, titled Fullness of the Inconceivable Kingdom on the back of the canvas, I explore the parable of the kingdom of heaven through the image of a majestic oak providing refuge for black birds. I originally created this piece as a "visual sermon," painting it live onstage at Oak Hills Church in Folsom, California.

This work is a harmonious blend of photorealism and mixed media created by layering photo transfers over Bible pages. Using acrylic, colored pencil, wax pastel, and ephemera, I built physical layers to represent the spiritual depth and sanctuary found within the parable.

"Mixed media artworks exploring the quiet miracles of nature and the solace found in slow living."

Judith Monroe is a California-based mixed media artist who weaves together photography, paint, and ephemera to uncover the 'hidden treasures' of the natural world. While she initially pursued writing in college, discovering the magic of the darkroom shifted her path toward visual exploration. In her artworks, she layers original photographs with rich textures and found elements to represent the many layers of meaning found in nature. Her work is a search for solace and connection and is held in public and private collections from Sacramento to Scotland.

Artist Statement
"In a world that is often too loud and too fast, I find my solace in the “slow hike,” those moments spent crouched over a trail, examining a single leaf or the intricate life cycle of a butterfly.

My process is an act of gathering: I collect natural objects, capture fleeting light through my lens, and layer these elements with paint and ephemera. I see the natural world as a place of profound refreshment and connection, where I often find reminders of my faith and a much-needed sense of peace.

To me, a breeze is like a gentle caress, a leaf is a symbol for growth, and a butterfly is a reminder of our potential for transformation. I create because I believe we all need to be surrounded by things that energize the soul, the tiny, persistent miracles of hope waiting in our own backyards."
