The Hikari — Japanese Ceremonial Silk Lumbar Pillow, Tonal Weave in Cream and Pearl

Price $362

A lumbar pillow cover in Japanese ceremonial silk, cut from a Japanese ceremonial obi: a tonal hikari (光, light) weave — close-toned cream and pearl, present without announcement, no figurative motif. Envelope-pocket back, undyed linen reverse, no metal against the silk; 50 × 30 cm. For pale, restful interiors. Spot clean only. Unrepeatable, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam. Hikari. Light. The quiet field of a household textile that anchored a Japanese drawer for decades — a silk of restraint, present without announcement. The ground is a quiet field of warm tonal weave — the kind of obi that anchored a household textile drawer for decades without ever needing to announce itself. The colours sit close in tone, the surface alive with the subtle play of light across silk fibre. The cream gives the composition its calm. The pearl gives it its luminance. A pillow for white linen sofas, ivory beds, rooms where stillness is cultivated — quiet beauty for ordinary moments, gathered around a shared table. The face is the original silk, backed in undyed linen. Envelope pocket closure. No metal touches the visible silk. Renaras is an Amsterdam atelier that transforms vintage Japanese ceremonial silk (kimono, obi, furisode and uchikake) into contemporary objects for the home and wardrobe. Wall tapestries, silk textile paintings, bed runners, cushions, table runners, placemats, napkins, bottle sleeves and knot bags are each cut from a single textile, so every piece is unrepeatable. The practice follows mottainai, the Japanese conviction that nothing of value should be wasted. Silk woven for ceremony is given a second life rather than left folded away. Each piece is finished by skilled seamstresses and accompanied by a record of its provenance.
