An original 12 x 12 inch acrylic painting on wood panel now framed in a 13.5 x 13.5" x 1.25" deep white solid wood floater frame. The same frame is on the other small tree paintings this size, Afternoon Bay Laurel (13.5 x 13.5") and Sunrise Magnolia (13.5 x 13.5").
This is a California Bay Laurel tree. It is native to California and Oregon. Here, in Northern California, most of the native trees such as Madrone, Monterey, Pine and Bay, Laurel do not lose their leaves in winter, so, even though I gathered these branches during a January hike, they were green with tiny berries anticipating spring.
The different darker and lighter layers of this painting are thin and sheer, each showing through the next, which gives a softness and glow. You can see the dark pencil lines outlining the leaves. That is deliberate. Without those lines demarcating the silhouette, the leaves would dissolve into the very sheer sky and the design would have less impact.
