A series recalling summers spent in western North Carolina, in a small community 20 miles east of Asheville – a home-away-from-home. Days filled with wrap-around porches, crisp, refreshing mountain air, the sticky sweetness of blooming rhododendron flowers, the soothing backdrop of meandering streams, and the pleasant shock of icy cold water on your feet. Most notably, the soothing scents and sounds of storms making their way across the mountains and through the evergreen forests - an experience intricately woven into the fabric of personhood. A collection of nostalgia - recalling a time and a place of memory - of a slow pace, of being present to the sights, sounds and memories of summer.

Abstracts in ink + acrylic

Beth Winterburn is an abstract painter whose mixed media works - combining ink, acrylic, latex and oil stick on raw canvas - explore the complexities of relationships through color, line, and texture. Her gestural brushstrokes and minimalist details create visual stories that balance longing, acceptance, tension and resolve, allowing her work to serve as both a journal and a record of lived experience. Beth’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the interplay of structure and spontaneity and seeks to expose the tension of expectation with reality. She approaches each canvas with a mathematical mindset - counting evens and odds, balancing lights and darks, and dividing compositions into thirds and fifths - while simultaneously embracing the expressive freedom of gesture. She is a student of her materials and finds deep satisfaction in learning and embracing the attributes of each medium that she utilizes. Her marks and brushstrokes are intentionally left visible, inviting the viewer to develop his or her own relationship with the outcome. The processes of making are as important as the finished piece. Her work encourages contemplation of relationships, personal growth, and the passage of time, inviting viewers to see cohesion in seemingly unrelated gestures. Each painting is an exploration of connectivity, a visual dialogue between experience and expression.

Beth began her studies in Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but quickly realized that the Fine Arts department was a more natural fit, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art in 2002. During college, she worked alongside a photojournalistic photographer and spent much of her time in the darkroom. Developing film was a process that taught her patience, developed her attention to composition and shaped her analytical eye. This early photography experience would later influence her painting, helping her balance color, line, and form. During her years as an art student, she also spent time exploring other media, including clay, watercolor, sculpture, printmaking, and small-scale painting projects. Beth's work is characterized by her distinctive approach to mixed media, combining ink, acrylic, latex and oil stick on raw canvas utilizing watercolor techniques to create gestural, expressive works. Her work has been featured on HGTV’s Property Brothers and in print and online publications including Anthropologie, Crate and Barrel, The Koronette, Fanique Magazine, Maker’s Movement, At Home Memphis & Mid-South, Orlando Soria, I AM THE LAB, and Style Blueprint. She has showcased her work in numerous exhibitions and art events across the United States and abroad, with a concentration in and around the Southeast. Her paintings have been featured by prominent interior designers and leading international retailers, and have found their place in distinguished private and public collections around the world.
