Item details

Gamaliel Ramirez' “Birds of Latin America" (103' x 9'; 1981, restored in 2004) is just one of the murals the local artist has painted during his illustrious 40-year career in Chicago. He painted the birds in 1981 with assistance from student artists at Centro Unidad Latina.

"My motivation for painting community murals are many, at the beginning and until this day my inspiration comes from the belief that art belongs to the people, another reason was to utilizing this medium as a communication and educational tool, enabling me and many of Chicago's communities organizations and institutions to express their specific concerns, issues and cultural identity," according to Ramirez.
